限定用法と叙述用法

形容詞の2つの使い方

He is awake. (叙述のみ)

彼は目を覚ましている。

💡 awake, asleep, alive などは叙述用法のみ。late, certain は用法で意味が変わる

形容詞の後置

名詞の後ろに置く形容詞

Those present at the party enjoyed it.

パーティーに出席した人たちは楽しんだ。

💡 present（出席して）は叙述用法で後置。something strange のように不定代名詞も後置

数量形容詞

little, few, much, many

There is little difference.

ほとんど違いがない。

💡 little/much は不可算、few/many は可算。a little/a few は肯定的、little/few は否定的

意味が変わる形容詞

late, certain など

My late mother loved cats.

亡くなった母はネコが好きだった。

💡 late: 限定用法→亡くなった、叙述用法→遅刻した。certain: 限定用法→ある、叙述用法→確かな

もう / まだ / まだ

I haven't seen the movie yet.

私はまだその映画を見ていない。

💡 already: 肯定文、yet: 否定文・疑問文、still: 継続を強調

ago / before

〜前に

She said she had seen him two days before.

彼女は2日前に彼を見たと言った。

💡 ago: 現在を基準、before: 過去のある時点を基準

too / either

〜もまた

I won't join, either.

私も参加しない。

💡 too: 肯定文で「〜もまた」、either: 否定文で「〜もまた（〜ない）」

abroad / overseas

海外へ

Many people study abroad.

多くの人々が留学する。

💡 abroad は副詞なので前に前置詞をつけない（× to abroad）

群動詞

動詞 + 前置詞

look into, account for など

The police looked into the case.

警察はその事件を調べた。

💡 look into = investigate、account for = explain、stand for = represent

動詞 + 副詞

give up, put off など

Please give it up.

それをやめてください。

💡 代名詞は動詞と副詞の間に置く: give it up（× give up it）

動詞 + 副詞 + 前置詞

put up with, look up to など

I can't put up with this noise.

この騒音には我慢できない。

💡 put up with = endure、look up to = respect、do away with = abolish

make up for

〜の埋め合わせをする

Work hard to make up for your lack of experience.

経験不足を埋め合わせるために熱心に働きなさい。

💡 make up for = compensate for（埋め合わせる）

💡 almost は副詞なので名詞を直接修飾できない。almost all または most of を使う

a large number of / amount of

多数の / 多量の

We need a large amount of money.

私たちは多額のお金が必要だ。

💡 number of = 可算名詞、amount of = 不可算名詞

分数の表し方

two-thirds など

The country is two-thirds the size of Japan.

その国は日本の3分の2の大きさだ。

💡 分数: 分子(基数)→分母(序数)。分子が2以上なら分母は複数形
